For several years we have supported Pump Aid at this church. You can read about
'Pump Aid' on their own website and how
they install Elephant Pumps at boreholes in African countries. These simple pumps
are easily maintained by the same villagers who power them by hand crank or linked bicycle.
To aid our fundraising efforts we built a model which can be operated by visitors.
Education and the provision of a quality water supply are closely linked .
The 'Pump Aid' display in Church was prompted by the concept of Education Sunday and those Services associated with this theme. It was prepared as United Utilities commenced renewing mains water pipes in Kendal Thankfully the installation of plastic pipe work will enable continued supply of this resource for many more years. Out of sight maybe. but out of mind, hopefully not.
lan Thorpe, Executive Director, Pump Aid has informed us that our Christmas donation of £200 has enabled installation of a pump in a community with a small school. Whilst in an e-mail, received on March 1st, he stated. "Richard, the rate of exchange in Zimbabwe has now risen to a favourable level after a dramatic collapse so we are now changing the £800 that were last sent to the two schools (Primary and Secondary at Watsomba). The rate is 7,5000 ZWD (dollars) to the pound which means that each school will receive 3 million ZWD a quite significant sum. It was well worth while holding on for a better exchange rate and I will supply you with full feedback of how the money is used when I receive it from Zimbabwe in the coming months. With kind regards. IanThorpe".
Meanwhile, thanks to the generosity of many, the bucket for Education Sunday received donations totalling £165.
This has been forwarded to `Pump Aid', and will go towards helping a small community have an improved life style. Mothers and children no longer spending hours collecting poor quality water for drinking and washing. Yes. Zimbabwe and Pump Aid are possibly out of sight but thanks to you not out of mind.
